West Industrial Ltd. (West) was founded by Jeremy Cheyne and James Dyack after a successful corporate disposition of its predecessor, West Oilfield Holdings Ltd. The primary objective was to seek out arbitrage opportunities in the energy services sector that included human capital intensive businesses (as opposed to asset heavy) to facilitate nimble operations during the global energy downturn.
Gibralt Capital Corp., the family office of the Belzberg family, secured a majority equity position in West. Sam Belzberg is appointed the Chairman and both him and Doug Pulver joined Jeremy Cheyne on the Board of Directors.
West acquires Bekmar Holdings Ltd. Bekmar was a mechanical contractor focused on commercial and industrial underground utilities construction, gasfitting, and commercial base building. Under West's guidance, Bekmar constructed/retrofitted hotels, shopping centers, schools, universities with a client roster that included Costco, ATCO, SAIT, the City of Calgary, and multinational REITs.
West acquires Can-Am Geomatics Corp. from its founding shareholders. The platform investment adds 200 employees and included offices in Calgary, Sherwood Park, Bonnyville, Grande Prairie, Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, and Swift Current. Can-Am was founded in 1973 and was widely considered the premier land survey and geomatics company serving the energy sector in western Canada.
West sponsored Kurt Bensmiller in the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby and the Ponoka Stampede. The sponsorship with the Bensmiller family proved serendipitous as the West Industrial Chuckwagon Team won the triple crown that included the Rangeland Derby Championship, the Calgary Stampede Aggregate Champion, and the Ponoka Stampede Champion.
With deep sorrow, Sam Belzberg passed away at the age of 89. With his passing, the shareholders of West acquired the majority interest in West from Gibralt Capital Corp. but his legacy at West will continue to be honored.
Can-Am and Bekmar are rebranded to West Geomatics Ltd. and West Mechanical Ltd. Shortly thereafter, West Mechanical Ltd. and the Can-Am legal entities (including proprietary data) were successfully sold in a corporate disposition. West maintained the geomatics and land survey divisions of the business.
West Industrial Ltd. is rebranded to West Earth Sciences Ltd. to reflect the overall branding and corporate direction of the organization more appropriately.
